Thế nhưng anh vẫn ngồi vào bàn cùng bè bạn
Cầm lên nhấm nháp.
Chả là nếu anh từ chối
Chúng sẽ bảo anh phá rối
Ðêm vui
Bảo anh không còn có khả năng nhai
Và đưa anh từ nay ra khỏi tiệc...

Thế thì đâu còn dịp nhai thứ thiệt?
Rốt cuộc anh lại ngồi vào bàn
Như không có gì xảy ra hết
Và những người khác thấy anh ngồi,
Họ cũng ngồi thôi
Nhai ngồm ngoàm... (8-1991)

Fictive Cake

Even before taking it up to taste,

he did know it was a fictive cake

but he still sat down to the table among comrades

then picked it up to savour.

The main reason has it that: if he declined to join,

they would condemn him for spoiling the enjoying evening,

they would falsely claim he had lost the capacity of chewing

to eject him from the feast;

this expulsion would deprive him

of any eventual chance of eating real ones.

At the very end, he kept taking firmly the seat at the table

as if nothing happened around.

Other folks, following his acting, settled down,

muttering indecently, full mouths. ---

 

Gâteau fictif

Avant même de le prendre pour gouter

il a connu bien c’était un gâteau fictif.

Pourtant, il s’attabla parmi les camarades,

puis il le saisit pour savourer.

(La raison en est que) s’il refusait de participer

ils le taxeraient de saboter la soirée de jouissance et,

citant faussement l’incapacité de sa part de mâcher,

l’éjecteraient du festin.

Cette élimination allait lui couter désormais

toute chance d’en manger de vrais.

Enfin, il se noua fermement à son assise tabulaire

comme si rien ne survint aux alentours.

Et les autres, en le voyant bien siégé, s’installaient

mâchant indécemment, bouche pleine.
